Madame Alexander Dolls
Most women today will tell you that they have certainly heard of Madame Alexander dolls. They may have even owned a few in their lifetime. These highly collectible dolls have been in production since 1923, so they have a very long history of delighting young girls through many generations of families. In fact, they have been produced well longer than the popular Barbie doll!
You may not hear as much about Madame Alexander dolls these days because they are not mass produced and sold in retail stores. Originally, the dolls were manufactured in New York, however they are now made in China.
These dolls are collectible because their themes are very unique. For instance, there was a series of dolls created decades ago that featured a doll from almost every major country on the planet. These dolls were dressed in the native clothing of that country. There have also been dolls created that represented famous people such as the Dionne Quintuplets, Princess Elizabeth and Snow White. The most popular Madame Alexander doll is called the Wendy and it is 8 inches tall. This doll has been produced since the 1950’s! The premium doll called Cissy is 21 inches toll, and they make other dolls that are in between those sizes.
Madame Alexander dolls were originally made of cloth, however in the 1950’s they switched to hard plastic to follow the trend of other doll and toy makers.
Collecting dolls has long been a past time of little girls and their older counterparts. Madame Alexander dolls are no exception as they are still highly collectible and hard to find. You will not see them in your local shopping mall, and they do not have their own retail stores like American Girl. However, they still hold a solid place in the hearts of millions of girls and their mothers.
